Are Quitters Made or Born?

by Andy Warner on January 27, 2009

Scenario 1.
A 40 something year old married man, father of two, volunteers to coach his daughter’s 8 year old youth soccer team.  He immediately volunteered to coach as soon as the offer was raised for a parent-coach.  He had “experience playing” soccer and the parents nonchalantly approved.

During the beginning of the season, the coach ran up and down the sidelines yelling at his daughter.  ”Pass the ball!  Shoot!  Score!  Dribble!  Why did you do that?!  Think!”. Were some of his coaching directions.  The players looked around scared to play and scared to make a mistake.  Throughout the middle part of the season, the coach sat players when they made a mistake.  He sat players if they did not pay attention.  The coach constantly ran up and down the sidelines yelling at players for making mistakes.  At the end of the season, the coach promised he would return.  He told the parents he enjoyed the experience and thought there was more that needed to be done.  The coach and his daughter left the team not returning the following season.

Scenario 2.
A 7 year old quits playing a Wii video game after two tries because he is not beating the game.  He throws down the controller and storms off screaming… “I don’t like this game!”

Question: Are quitters made or born?
