Made to Stick – Video Book Review

by Andy Warner on April 30, 2010

Made to Stick is a book you must pick up now!

Leo Durocher never said nice guys finish last.  But he is credited with creating the phrase.

Sherlock Holmes never said, “Elementary, my dear Watson.”. If you ask most people to name a Sherlock Holmes quote, this would be it.  Holmes never said his famous quote.  He frequently said, “My dear Watson” and he often said, “Elementary.”  Thus, Holmes could possibly be attributed with the combined quote because he reinforces our natural schema of Sherlock Holmes.

Two famous quotes never said by the people attributed to creating them.  How does this happen?  How did these messages stick?

The audience.

(Video book review of Made to Stick)

Despite our well intented message, brillantly crafted presentation, magnificent video, the audience still chooses what they will take away from the message.  Your job is then to make sure that your message focuses on your core message relentlessly.

The Heath brothers brillantly share how to make your core message resonate during your presentation, discussion and/or conversation by the acronym S.U.C.C.E.S.s.  I will not share with you what those letters represent, you must read the book yourself to determine what they are.  What I will tell you is that Made to Stick focuses on improving your communication–a speech, a conversation, blog post, whatever your medium of communication is–to make it sustaining.  Heath and Heath researched hundreds of marketing strategies and tactics across multiple business verticals to provide you with what works, now, in a simple format.  Our society wants tools to help them now, the strategy outlined in this book works now.  Viral (aka sustaining) marketing is what works.  The Heath brothers show you how to grab your audience from the first word, keep them engaged through your discussion and create champions of your thoughts motivating change days, months and years following your talk.

The authors will not tell you how to write a blog post and they will not give you the “7 steps to build a funny video”.  The research conducted for the book occurred before 2009.  This book was published during the early stages of blogging.  The information in this book will provide you with the essential elements you need to write that enduring blog post, to manufacture that brilliant ad campaign and to shoot that viral video.  The book is presented in a manner that reinforces the authors points (even with periodic case studies to review).

Read Made to Stick, learn, take notes, re-read the book, study your notes and make your ideas stick.  Ultimately, our goal is to share OUR message.  The world and you will be better for it.

Great review, Andy. Glad you liked it. As you mentioned, anyone who believes in the importance of getting a message across and have it remembered could benefit from this book.

Thanks again for recommending it. I look forward to reading their next book, Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard.
