New Media Cincinnati Privacy Discussion
To be Private or Not? That is the Question.
I wanted to share my thoughts with you regarding the recent New Media Cincinnati event I attended this past Saturday. The topic of the event was Social Media Privacy. Three individuals shared their experiences and opinions regarding online privacy. I shared my pre-discussion thoughts and my post-discussion thoughts.
Panelists were Michelle Beckham-Corbin, DG Hollums and Daniel Johnson, Jr. Event was sponsored by Eric Marshall from EJM Designs and the event was hosted by the Pub at Rookwood Mews.

Andy,
Great way to showcase your pre-event thoughts with the post-event experience. Very cool that you paraphrased me- glad someone was listening! As I become more and more enamored of Foursquare from a marketing perspective, I am at the same time experiencing more concern over my privacy. It will be interesting to see how this dilemma plays out for folks especially with more social platforms switching on the geo-location capabilities.

I, too, experience the same dichotomy–as a business marketer I am VERY interested in the geo-location marketing possibilities on the horizon, but as an individual and new parent, I am concerned about the lowering curtain of privacy.

I loved that you reminded us that these are just social networking tools, and they won’t fix a bad business model. Like Michelle and others, I’ve become more concerned about the personal privacy and have taken steps to reclaim some of my own.
Do you find any irony that the man hosting the panel on privacy in social media is spear-heading a campaign to out one of his critics?

@laurenjohnson: Lauren, I am unfamiliar with this campaign. Can you share more of what you are referring?
Daniel Johnson Jr. has been mocked by Newer Media Cincy or @NewerMediaCincy for awhile now and has started harassing their facebook fans and twitter followers, demanding the identity behind the account. I believe this poor judgment is a reflection on his leadership skills, especially in the field he’s attempting to represent.
As a “social media expert,” shouldn’t one understand the nature of the internet and realize that it’s not just a forum for praise, but one for criticism as well?
